Position Summary

The Director, Technical Projects provides leadership and is responsible for supporting the development and execution of company-wide technical projects related to newbuildings, and revitalizations.  Incumbent ensures each project receives the necessary project management, technical support and engineering expertise. The continued development of the unique skill set and expertise of the group through the improvement of processes and procedures is a key element of this position. The incumbent demonstrates extensive knowledge of the applicable concepts, practices and procedures and relies on experience and innovative thinking to accomplish tasks and meet target dates. One of the main responsibilities is to ensure, quality, timely completion, budget compliance, transparent reporting and follow up. In so doing, the incumbent continuously manages all communications and correspondence between the various stakeholders and others in different levels of the organization. Reports to the AVP, Technical Projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, development and direction of his team and its activities and oversees the coordination of the technical and administrative aspects of projects with the relevant stakeholders.
  • Responsible for the budget of his group and actively assists in budgeting and analysis of Projects, Revitalizations, and New Buildings.
  • Ensures all projects are adequately resourced with internal project management expertise and external specialist services as required.
  • Reports as required the status of projects from development through to execution along with the relevant follow up and makes recommendations based on his findings.  Prepares composite reports from individual reports of team members and prepares management presentations.
  • Provides support to the brands in relation to drydocking of their fleets
  • Ensures that the application of all materials, engineering and marine technical equipment relating to projects is appropriate, cost effective and in accordance with applicable industry codes.
  • Stays current on relevant technical research and projects; seek information and evaluates new technology for use on board, and where appropriate run test programs on such equipment together the manufacturing company and associated teams.
  • Performs related duties as required with or without accommodation.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited university with a concentration in engineering, naval architecture or related field.
  • Institute of Marine Engineers/Naval Architects or similar background
  • 7 years of experience supporting technical projects, shipbuilding or ship revitalizations.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Responsible for a portfolio of projects of approximately $50 million.

Job Requirements


  • Master’s degree from an accredited school in the study of engineering management or substantial completion of Bachelors program with compensating work experience such as naval architecture. 
  • Project management experience in shipbuilding is critical. Must be familiar with the working drawing process inclusive of drawing, dimensioning and detailing floor plans, elevations, sections and details.
  • Ability to understand and interpret architectural plans, sections, elevations, and details.  Exceptional interpersonal skills are absolutely required, as well as the ability to be a strong team player. A proven background in team building and personnel development is a must.
  • Working knowledge of Windows NT, Microsoft Word, Excel and familiarity with AutoCAD system.   Internet and e-mail literate with ability to send, receive and attach files as required. Must be proactive, organized and have the ability to take initiative, be multi-faceted.
  • Ability to travel as necessary to support the needs and requirements of the projects.

Language Skills 

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. 
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. 
  • Ability to effectively present information to any and all levels of employees.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Ability to speak other languages a plus.
  • Uses technical abilities and interpersonal skills to influence, delegate, motivate, encourage and advise his team and stakeholders on how to achieve optimum results
