Job Description

Position Summary:

Subject matter procurement expert for petroleum products and marine lubricants. Identifies suppliers from a variety of usual (bunker sellers, traders) and unusual sources (oil refineries, governments, utilities). Confers with suppliers, ports, government authorities to obtain product or service information such as price, availability, delivery schedule, maritime safety/security requirements. Responsible for short and long term planning and strategizing for petroleum products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Formulate highly sophisticated procurement and negotiation strategy based on multiple and very volatile variables that drive crude and petroleum markets. Negotiates contractual premia, transportation and delivery schedule based on advanced economic order quantity concepts as well as compatibility of specific bunker products
  •  Contribute to the RCL¿s industry-leading fuel risk management (hedging practice) by recognizing fuel contractual arbitrage potential while achieving hedge effectiveness for accounting purposes
  • Perform complex price analysis of multiple parameters, such as regional fuel price differentials, freight, fuel energy content, sulphur. Expert use of statistics, forecasting, problem solving and quality improvement to develop strategies for dynamic market conditions.
  • Analyze specific market data, such us U.S. Dept of Energy Petroleum Reports, American Petroleum Institute, International Energy Agency forecasts to formulate negotiations, strategies and plans.
  • Lead quarterly business reviews with fuel suppliers covering major performance indicators such as on-time delivery, ISO 8217 and Solas compliance, quantity measurements.
  • Prepare and conduct periodic industry regulatory seminars, formulates energy procurement policy for various stakeholders and brands (Royal, Celebrity, Pullmantur, TUI, Pullmatur Air, Facilities, RCT, Gov¿t relations). Acutely supports Environmental Stewardship to ensure sound cost-effective compliance.
  • Identify potential alternative bunker locations based on predictive price analysis (geographical location impact on freight, local regulations, taxes, barge and pier suitability.)
  • Assist the development/adjustment of bunker product characteristics for optimal performance and compliance by liaising with major oil refineries
  • Evaluate engine performance trends and operating conditions to source cost effective and reliable main engine lubricant products


Job Requirements


  • 8 + years procurement experience with proven track record of successfully negotiating $100M+ global supply contracts
  • A minimum of 6 years petroleum industry experience in refining, downstream operation, or marketing
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required in related field; Masters degree preferred
  • Expert knowledge of global petroleum and bunkers supply
  • Working knowledge of Platts, Argus, and Bunkerworld oil pricing services
  • Understanding of fuel blending and freight economics, global refining markets
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with multiple projects and priorities
  • Negotiation and analytical skills required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in a multicultural environment with all levels of employees and management.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically Excel.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from suppliers and all levels of staff and management, both shipboard and shoreside.
