Position Summary:

The Manager, Database Systems is a technical manager who is responsible for the development and execution of technical goals and strategies within Information Technology for the company’s Database Management Systems. Evaluates business opportunities and implements cost effective solutions. Prepares and manages departmental budgets. Performs independently, and proactively collaborates internally and externally to solve technical and business problems.  Leads others, either directly or indirectly, and is accountable for the results of the team and/or function.  Position will manage an operation staff supporting a 24/7 global operation of internal and external users, technical staff and management. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead, develop and mentor direct reports such as Technical Managers, Engineers, Technical Architects and contractors (including offshore partners) in establishing benchmark performance goals.
  • Lead the recruitment process for the Database Systems team.
  • Lead the estimations and project tasks assigned to the team for all new development projects.
  • Sets the vision, strategic direction for the Database Systems Team and aligns the roadmap to the business initiatives and goals.
  • Develops and administers skills assessments, Individual Development Plans and training plans. Coordinates training and technology overviews
  • Develop and track staffing plans and ensures the team is adequately staffed with skilled professionals.
  • Develop project and funding proposals for programs that provide continuous delivery of cost-effective Database Management Systems solutions that meet business requirements.
  • Cultivates relationships with fellow colleagues throughout the organization.
  • Monitor and manage Database Systems team labor and operational costs, and input to the budgeting process, including variance analysis and forecasting.

Financial Responsibilities

  • Creates and manages budget of $2 million dollars or more of for own operating group and/or projects under their supervision
  • Solid understanding of accounting rules for expense and capital activities
  • Ensures efficient utilization of staff and non-labor resources
  • Solid understanding of IT estimation activities
  • Accountable for financial implications and cost of systems and services
  • Responsible for defining optimization opportunities to manage expenses
  • Ensures tier-1 vendors comply with Vendor Management Organization policies

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in area of specialty, or equivalent experience
  • 8 or more years of experience in Database Administration or in a related area
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge and capabilities across specific area of responsibility
  • Proven experience in leading 5 or more employees and developing technical professionals
  • Experience in working senior management and executive teams in IT and business.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiar with various Database Management Systems, packaged Enterprise Resource Planning software systems, Business Intelligence (BI) offerings, operating systems, storage options, networking, and security. Familiar with tools to manage these various environments.
  • Requires team-building skills. Ability to anticipate and identify potential issues for consideration and raise them in a clear and concise manner along with recommendations for potential solutions.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple work streams concurrently
  • Must be familiar with TCO analysis.
  • Must be familiar in writing effective statements of work (SOW)
  • Analytical and problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Effective verbal, presentation and listening communications skills
  • Computer skills including the ability to operate computerized accounting, spreadsheet, word-processing, graphics

Physical Demands:

  • Primarily sitting for an extended period. Travel to shipyards or onto RCCL vessels where there may be some lifting, pulling and specific work attire is necessary for safety measures. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Majority of work takes place at RCCL’s Port location with selected assignments in other domestic/international locations and/or shipside. Select assignments may require partial to significant time shipside as well as at other RCCL operating locations domestically and internationally.
