Position Summary:
This position is responsible for coordinating and providing overall leadership and support to Managers, Marine Operations and ensuring that all operational systems are streamlined and followed. A nominated Ship Manager, Marine Operations will serve as Deputy for this position. This person could be assigned on a rotational basis to make sure it is covered during certain periods.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure that ships are operated in compliance with the policies of the corporation and within the rules and regulations of the appropriate governing authorities and agencies with special attention given to safety, security and protection of the environment.
- Work closely with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies regulating the operation of our ships.
Monitor, oversee and provide support and direction to the Managers, Marine Operations, for their assigned vessels. - This includes operations, maintenance, repair, dry docking, replacement equipment purchases and overall budget control.
- Monitor ongoing performance of each ship, maintain frequent communication with senior management (Captain, Staff Captain, Chief Engineer, and Hotel Director (except communication)) and provide technical guidance/support through prompt and positive action.
- Follow up on resolution of technical issues by GMTS and the applicable technical superintendent thru assigned Ship Manager.
Set up and maintain a succession plan for all Captains, Staff Captains, Chief Engineers and Chief Engineer Jr. - Work closely with the AVP, Marine Operations RCL UK, HR and Hotel Operations to select and assign ship Management Teams and evaluate senior shipboard officers.
- Participate in succession planning, training, evaluation and development for department personnel and relevant shipboard personnel.
Represent Royal Caribbean on damage claims by working closely with both the Underwriter and Insurance Coordinator. - Responsible for providing adequate documentation and arranging surveys for the associated claims.
- Maintain current knowledge of up-to-date technical research and relevant projects, plus maintain an oversight of new technology for use onboard Royal Caribbean ships, and run test programs on such equipment together with ships' personnel.
- Represent Royal Caribbean at cruise association meetings (FCCA, NWCA, ICCL, etc.) as required.
- Work closely with representatives from various classification societies and governing agencies regulating the operation of our ships.
- Initiate action to prevent the re-occurrence of any non-conformities relating to product, process, and quality systems in the Marine Operations area.
- Identify and record any problems relating to the product, process, and quality systems in the Marine Operations Department.
- Leadership concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations and terminations.
- Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees.
- Communicate company and department goals and targets with managers, marine operation.
- Accountable to communicate and create transparency between GMTS and Managers marine operation.
