The Cloud Engineer will work closely with our Businesses and Partners while drawing on years of engineering experience, in-depth cloud based knowledge, and technical skills to ensure the deliverables are of the highest caliber capable of exceeding client satisfaction. This person must have expertise to identify, develop, and implement measures that transform and evolve the enterprise with innovative cloud solutions thereby changing the status quo. 

The Cloud Engineer’s contributions will improve resource elasticity, provisioning, be broadly accessible, serve multiple businesses, and be measurable resulting in increased efficiency and effectiveness. The Engineer must be able to lead and guide cloud services, supporting systems, cloud components, relationships between cloud components and other environments, values and attributes of cloud design, and governance of the clouds evolution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with peers and product managers to design, develop, integrate and deploy virtual infrastructure in public and cloud environments.
  • Develop and integrate build automation platforms such as Terraform and Ansible to aid in the automation of deployment into virtual environments.
  • Develop and integrate monitoring, management and reporting services.
  • Consult to business, business leaders, and partners
  • Integrate tools and services for cloud compute, network and capacity
  • Provide engineered solutions and respective artifacts supporting the use cases life cycle
  • Responsible development and integration of infrastructure end-to-end, designs, standards, processes, practices and tools supporting cloud solutions
  • Responsible for understanding customer requirements and enterprise standards
  • Improving solution performance, robustness, scalability, and business agility
  • Reducing time to market for all cloud use case scenarios
  • Update the enterprise wide cloud engineering framework, best practices and patterns.
  • Develop and document Cloud Engineering Artifacts
  • Work with steering committees and enterprise architecture boards to gain consensus and support for cloud use cases, standards, policies and directions.
  • Develop cloud tooling, technology and process definitions
  • Monitor adherence to cloud strategies, standards, designs, guidelines and policies
  • Direct, lead, moderate, and drive collaboration of work and participants on respective cloud solutions

Job Requirements


  • Minimum of 3 years, or equivalent, experience with public cloud (azure, aws, google)
  • Cloud certifications a requirement (aws or azure)
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience with application and infrastructure design, development, deployment, management and operations
  • Post-secondary degree, diploma, or equivalent demonstrate-able experience
  • Strong understanding of cloud computing technologies, services, delivery models and vendors
  • Automation experience using puppet, ansible, terraform or similar technologies and using the following: java, node.js, php, python, ruby on rails, and others
  • Solid understanding of networking principals in physical and virtual environments

Knowledge and Skills:

Cloud Computing - Proficiency Level 3 – Extensive Experience

  • Demonstrates experience implementing a wide range of cloud computing configurations.
  • Monitors and optimizes the ability of the data processing center to meet cloud computing demands.
  • Reduces security risks in cloud environments; automates compliance and data security management.
  • Implements server virtualization to maximize the output of individual servers and reduce the need for additional hardware.
  • Determines how networked client devices access cloud computing services.
  • Designs and builds frameworks for monitoring and managing cloud operations.

Capacity Planning & Management - Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Assesses the relationship between capacity, performance and service level requirements.
  • Applies appropriate tools and methods for capacity planning & performance management of applications.
  • Analyzes capacity data and identifies common capacity problems or bottlenecks.
  • Works with developers and users to plan resource requirements for networks or systems under development.
  • Produces, collates and reports capacity-related measurements to examine application service levels.

Hardware Infrastructure- Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Assists in designing the main features of IT hardware according to business needs.
  • Participates in the implementation of IT hardware within the organization.
  • Tracks operational problems related to IT hardware and reports them directly to the supervisor.
  • Compares IT hardware across one's own organization and its competitors.
  • Assists in integrating IT hardware with the organization's existing systems.

Performance Management and Tuning - Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Validates performance characteristics for specific technologies.
  • Works with the performance measurements of hardware, software or network components.
  • Monitors the performance of specific system components.
  • Researches performance objectives and requirements for a component or application.
  • Works with installed software tools for performance monitoring and reporting.

System Development Lifecycle- Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Defines processes in the system development life cycle and data model.
  • Prepares for systems and business requirements analysis.
  • Participates in the development of applications using the life-cycle approach.
  • Integrates all system life cycle components into a testing environment to check bugs, errors and interoperability.
  • Selects the tools and techniques used for functional decomposition. 

Incident Management- Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Provides detail description of 1st line resolution procedure and examples of incident action plans.
  • Has experience with using an event management system for logging and tracking incidents.
  • Cites examples of unusual incidents; follows proper notifications and escalation procedures.
  • Describes common incidents and existing/planned countermeasures, workarounds or fixes.
  • Is knowledgeable in all stages and major activities of the incident life cycle.

Problem Management- Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Performs major problem management activities designed to improve the general quality of IT services.
  • Participates in assessing repeated incidents to determine if there is an underlying problem.
  • Monitors specific problems while developing solutions to resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Tracks and resolves common types of service related problems.
  • Utilizes procedures for monitoring problem resolution and providing feedback to customers.

Scripting Systems Engineering - Proficiency Level 2 – Working Knowledge

  • Defines available wizards, utilities, plug-ins, and applets for a specific software application.
  • Analyzes major frames, forms, tables, layers, and their relationships within a scripting language.
  • Applies a scripting and display language within a specific system environment.
  • Applies best practices and standards for developing and maintaining scripts.
  • Performs embedded and remote scripting, event detection and handling.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Majority of work takes place at RCCL’s Port location with selected assignments in other domestic/international locations and/or shipside. Select assignments may require partial to significant time shipside as well as at other RCCL operating locations domestically and internationally.
