Position Summary: 

The Senior Manager, Database Systems is a technical manager who is responsible for the development and execution of technical goals and strategies within Information Technology for the company’s Database Management Systems and tools. The Senior Manager Database Systems role will also focus on driving innovation for emerging database technologies - help shape the future of the next generation platform for database services. This role works closely with Enterprise Data, Infrastructure, Enterprise Architecture, Delivery, Governance and IT leadership teams to provide operational direction, implementation, and support for IT solutions related to database systems. He/she will be accountable for driving operational excellence in the overall maintenance of our database systems developing database standards, ensuring availability, resilience, performance, security and regulatory compliance. The Senior Manager, Database Systems will report on project progress and operational metrics to executives and various stakeholders at the enterprise level.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead teams of employees and contractors managing complex projects. Provide leadership, mentorship and direction to the teams.
  • Define roadmaps and use cases directly with business and technology leaders to modernize our database portfolio (MS SQL, Db2 on i, Oracle, MySQL, PostGres, NoSQL (Couchbase, Cassandra, MongoDB), Ne04j including big data management and capability stack which include data movement, high availability, disaster recovery, security, compliance, analytics and artificial intelligence.
  • Collaborate with senior management and other peers for strategy development and execution planning
  • Lead our journey to the cloud and as a service model for database systems where possible
  • Lead the database team responsible for delivering, installing, and providing 24/7 global operational support, reliability and continuous improvement for database solutions and platforms
  • Develop project and funding proposals for programs that provide continuous delivery of cost-effective Database Management Systems solutions that meet business requirements.
  • Develop and track staffing plans and ensures the team is adequately staffed with skilled professionals.
  • Develop, evaluate, improve and implement procedures and policies, as well as organizational activities and initiatives

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Manage labor and non-labor budgets in excess of $4M USD
  • Develop business case and cost/benefit analysis for Database Administration capital requests, support operations spending and initiatives.
  • Responsible for defining optimization opportunities to manage expenses
  • Solid understanding of IT estimation activities. May lead large/complex estimation activities




Job Requirements


  • A minimum of 10 years relevant Database Systems experience or in a related area
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) in Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, or Information Systems, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge and capabilities across a variety of database systems and tools

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Technical experience and subject matter expert with various Database Management Systems, emerging database platforms, packaged Enterprise Resource Planning systems, Business Intelligence (BI) offerings, operating systems, storage options, networking, and security. Familiar with tools to manage these various environments.
  • Strong background in sourcing, implementing and managing Managed Services vendor relationships and contracts.
  • Strong leadership skills; proven experience in leading and developing technical professionals and influencing leaders
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the area of database systems, best practices and database tools relevant to our business environment
  • Remain current with industry best practices, trends, innovation, and emerging technologies in database platforms and tools in the marketplace
  • Capable of making independent decisions that impact IT and/or business strategy
  • Build a high-performance on-shore/off-shore database delivery team to ensure 24/7 database coverage.
  • Experience with Agile/Dev Ops methodologies and tools
  • Experience with Cloud (AWS, Azure, Oracle) database systems offerings and solutions
  • Subject matter expertise with database high availability solutions such as cluster, replication, standby
  • Strong knowledge of project management principles and disciplines; highly proficient in a number of areas including governance, financial and benefits realization, business case development etc.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective verbal, presentation, written and listening communications skills
  • Accepts accountability and manages execution of individual and team results at corporate and divisional level

Physical Demands:

  • Primarily sitting for an extended period. Travel to shipyards or onto RCCL vessels where there may be some lifting, pulling and specific work attire is necessary for safety measures. 


Majority of work takes place at RCCL’s Port location with selected assignments in other domestic/international locations and/or shipside. Select assignments may require partial to significant time shipside as well as at other RCCL operating locations domestically and internationally.
